Mission

Links to a Legacy is a descriptor that summarizes the very rich tradition shared between Claflin University and its vision for excellence in the visual arts. This vision continues in the tradition of Arthur Rose, and his contemporaries who provided a foundation of visual excellence. As exhibitions and supporting activities are scheduled, we must exist to celebrate visual excellence at Claflin and use this Legacy as a standard upon which selection criteria rest

A Message from the Director:

When I was appointed Director of the Arthur Rose Museum of Art, I had come full circle in my art career, vividly remembering when I discovered Professor Rose and his art department one afternoon during my first year at S.C. State College. He said in a soft voice, “Hey boy! What do you want?” I answered, “I want to paint.” He invited me in and showed me where the paints and canvases were, not realizing that was the first day in the rest of my professional life as an artist, educator, therapist, museum director, curator, and the aesthetic angel I became when I was place in my current position. This achievement is far beyond other honors I have received, including having my work in private and public collections, murals in schools, churches, and other buildings, receptions and awards such as the Hunter Excellence in Teaching Award at Claflin University. I am truly grateful.
