Ernest E. Just (1883-1941) Biologist

Just, a native of Charleston, South Carolina, earned the Bachelor of Arts degree with honors from Dartmouth College (1907) and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago (1916). He served as professor and chairperson of the Department of Zoology at Howard University, and professor and chairperson of the Department of Physiology at the Howard University Medical School. In 1915, Just was awarded the first Spingarn Medal from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). During the 1920’s, he received grants from the National Research Council, the General Education Board, and the Carnegie Corporation. This outstanding South Carolinian conducted research in Italy, France, and Germany as well, and in 1939 published The Biology of the Cell which explained the special significance of the outer cytoplasm (ectoplasm).

Purpose of the Ernest E. Just Science Club

  • To encourage individuals to become future scientists of America: researchers, medical and allied health professionals, teachers and other science practitioners
