The Public Health Alliance Student Organization

The Public Health Alliance Student Organization at Claflin University is a student-driven group developed to enhance the mission of the W.K. Kellogg Program in collaboration with The University of South Carolina and the Institute for Partnerships to Eliminate Health Disparities. The W.K. Kellogg African-American Public Health Fellowship and Development Program awards scholarships to undergraduate students at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), hence Kellogg Fellows participate in a variety of student development, research, and community service activities designed to introduce them to public health professions, health disparities research, and graduate studies in public health.

The core goal of the Public Health Alliance is to increase awareness and generate interest in public health among African-American students enrolled at Claflin University and in secondary schools in South Carolina. Therefore, the Public Health Alliance Organization welcomes students of all academic disciplines to become an active member to help generate a buzz about public health, and to implement universal initiatives to combat health disparities.

The following are some activities and initiatives of the Public Health Alliance:

  • Pilot Research Study “Body Image Perception Among Black College Females: Implications for Health Risks and Health Disparities” received first place among HBCU’s across the state.
  • Health presentations are made at local middle schools.
  • Public health displays are placed in dining center.
  • Exercise classes are held.
  • Collaborations are maintained with other health initiatives including Kidney Walk, Diabetes Walk, March of Dimes, Faith-Based Walk to Bethlehem, etc.
