HBCU-UP

Pre-Service Teacher Institute

Claflin University’s Building an exemplary model for science and math teaching is designed to prepare participants to be proficient in teaching science and math

Activities will include

Research & Instrumentation:
Students will utilize instrumentation and theory to understand the process skills of science i.e. observing, questioning, hypothesizing, predicting, investigating, interpreting and communicating

Molecular-Modeling:
Participants will visualize the 3D structures of gas, liquid and solid state molecules and be provided strategies to create electronic course materials

On-line Case-Based Methods:
Participants will have an opportunity to participate in on-line research-based case studies on teaching effectiveness: instructional experiences; problem-solving and solution strategies for science and math

Inquiry-based Teaching and Learning:
Participants will learn novel teaching techniques and best practices in STEM education

Seminar Series:
Dailey guest speakers will provide knowledge into career paths, cutting edge research in STEM education, best practices and effective tools for a successful teaching career

Saturday Workshops:
Participants are required to attend Saturday Workshops that will be held 6 times between September 2008 - April 2009 for 2 hour sessions

About the Summer

  • Participants are required to commit 100 percent participation to the entire program. This includes the summer component and the Saturday Workshop that are held 6 times between September 2008 - April 2009 for 2 hour sessions
  • Participate in courses that incorporate instrumentation, inquiry-based learning, molecular modeling and on-line delivery methods.
  • Participants will receive 3 credit hours towards graduation and certification requirements
  • Participants will utilize hands-on experiences in mathematics and science that include visits to local organizations and guest speakers from the field.
  • Participants will attend class from 9:00a.m.-1:00p.m.

Selection of Students

There will be a committee formed to review all applications received. The committee will select the top applications. The top students will receive notification of there selection.
