Programs
The Department of English and Foreign Languages offers three major programs leading to the following degrees:
- Bachelor of Arts (BA) degree with a major in English.
A degree in English is excellent preparation for law school or graduate school, and for any profession that requires close attention to language.
- BA degree with a major in English Education.
This program is designed for students who want to teach English (and related subjects) at the secondary school level.
- BA degree with a major in American Studies.
Students in this interdisciplinary program study the key ideas of major literary, philosophical, social, and artistic movements within the American experience.
The Department of English and Foreign Languages also offers minors in the following areas:
- American Studies
- English
- French
- Theatre Arts
- Spanish
- Gender Studies
General Requirements for the Department of English

The student must successfully complete the freshman English composition courses, ENGL 101 and ENGL 102 with a grade of "C" or above. If a student receives a "D+" or lower, she/he will be able to take one of the classes over to meet this requirement, but not both.
- Once accepted into the program, a student must maintain a GPA of 2.5 or above in her/his English courses. A student who falls below this level will have one semester, plus a summer, to raise her/his English GPA to the required 2.5.

Program Requirements for the Major in English

Students must fill out a Departmental Application for Major form and submit this form for approval and acceptance by the Department of English and Foreign Languages. Students cannot take more than nine (9) hours of courses in the English Major without approval and acceptance.
- All candidates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in writing, reading, and speaking. Approvals of applications in English Education, English, and American Studies will be under the jurisdiction for the departmental committee for major programs. Applications will be required to take a proctored reading test, write a timed essay, and appear before the departmental committee for an interview.

Programs Requirements for the Major in English Education
In addition to meeting the above requirements of English majors, English Education majors must also meet the following requirements:
- Apply and be accepted for admission to the Teacher Education Program.
- Pass Praxis I and Praxis II.
- Make application for Student Teaching.
- Complete each major content course, each professional education course and any elective with a grade of “C” or better.
Programs Requirements for the Major in American Studies
- Students must fill out a Departmental Application for Major form and submit this form for approval and acceptance by the Department of English and Foreign Languages. Students cannot take more than nine (9) hours of courses in the English Major without approval and acceptance.
- All candidates are expected to demonstrate proficiency in writing, reading, and speaking.
- Satisfy all testing requirements of the institution.
- Complete all requirements for graduation, including General Education requirements, course requirements for the American Studies major, and minor or elective requirements.
- Make application for graduation.
- Pass the Departmental Exit Examination.
- Satisfy thesis requirements (Honors students only) or senior project requirements
- Complete each major content course and minor/elective course
