Programs
Within the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the Department of History and Sociology performs a vital role: faculty provide instruction for three majors within the Department: African and African American Studies, History, and Sociology. In addition, through the Center for Professional and Continuing Studies, the Department has an evening degree in Sociology/Criminal Justice Administration.
African and African American Studies (AAAS):
Bachelor of Arts, Minor, and Certification. The historical, social, philosophical and religious perspectives and contributions of African and African Americans is the major focus of this interdisciplinary program of study.
History: BA degree with a major in History.
In addition to mastering the basics of American and world history, students in this program learn how to analyze and interpret historical data and how to think critically and analytically.
Sociology: BA degree with a major in Sociology.
Sociology is the study of human society and social relations. Students majoring in Sociology learn how to analyze and interpret sociological evidence and how to express themselves clearly as well as persuasively.
The department also offers minors in History, Political Science, Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Gerontology
Admission Requirements
A Major within the Department must successfully complete all General Education requirements and meet all Departmental requirements for his/her major. In addition, all majors must pass a Senior Exit Exam in their field. Passing grades are established by the Departmental Chair and faculty. Students may elect to have a minor. In lieu of a minor, students must have 18 hours of courses above the 200 level. Depending upon the major within the Department, students must have a minimum of 127 credit hours.
