Program
Claflin
University Programs for the Retention and Enrichment of Science,
Engineering and Mathematics students (PRESEMs) is designed to
strengthen participant’s skills in science, mathematics,
computer technology and communication.
Activities will include
Research - Based Instruction:
Hands on, innovative, inquiry based learning activities and research
in Biology, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry and Computer Science
Technical Writing:
PRESEMs will collaborate with the Division of Humanities at Claflin
University to provide content on technical writing
Research:
Participants will have an opportunity to compete in a mini research
project at Claflin University as well as utilize the Virtual Lab
Seminar Series:
Bi-weekly guest speakers will introduce the students to careers
and research in science, mathematics, engineering, and mathematics
(SMET) and graduate school
Recreational Activities:
Participants will visit neighboring research labs (academic, industrial,
and government) as well as participate in non-science enrichment
activities
About
the Summer
- Participants
are required to be on campus from Sunday through the end of
all activities on Friday
- Participants
will attend enrichment courses to improve performance in the
SMET fields
- Participants
will go on weekly field trips
- Participants
will do a formal presentation of research
- Participants
will attend bi-weekly seminars
- Participants
will attend class from 8:00 a.m.—5:00 p.m. Study Sessions
are held from 6:00 p.m.—until Program is very demanding.
Selection
of Students
There will be a committee formed to review all
applications received. The committee will select the top applications.
The top students will receive notification of there selection.
If one of the top students decides not to attend the program the
committee will then go to the waiting list. The waiting list will
remain active until the beginning date of the program.
Eligibility
Requirements
- High
school graduating senior majoring in the Natural Sciences or
Mathematics with paid confirmation fee to attend Claflin University
- Keen
interest in science, mathematics, engineering, and technology
fields
- Must
reside on campus until closing date of program

Expenses
- All
expenses will be covered
(room, board, etc.)
- Participants
will also receive a stipend
upon successful completion of
the program
