Scholarships Available for Study Abroad

Benjamin A. Gilman, International Scholarship Program
The Benjamin A. Gilman, International Scholarship Program reduces barriers to study abroad through providing assistance to those undergraduate students who demonstrate financial need. This program is offered through the Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs of the U.S. Department of State and is administered by the Institute of International Education. Selected recipients are awarded up to $5,000, depending on the length of their program, to defray the costs associated with studying abroad.

The Freeman Asia Program: Awards for Study in Asia
The Freeman-Asia Program exists to increase the number of American undergraduates who study in East and Southeast Asia, by providing students with the information and financial assistance they will need. Awardees will be expected to share their experiences with their home campus to encourage study abroad by others, ad to spread understanding of Asia in their home communities.

The UNCF/ Institute for International Public Policy (IIPP) Fellowship Program
The goal of the IIPP is to increase awareness of and interest in careers in international service among undergraduate students, especially students who are members of underrepresented minority groups. This program has two main goals: 1) to identify, recruit and prepare promising undergraduates of international service through a sequential program of policy institutes, study abroad, language training, internships and graduate education; 2) to strengthen, through resource development grants, the ability of minority- serving institutions to prepare students for international careers.
This program is open to sophomore students enrolled full-time at a four-year institution with a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher on a 4.0 scale. Favor is given to those students from minority- serving institutions.

American Institute for Foreign Study (AIFS)
The AIFS Minority Scholarship is designed to increase study abroad opportunities for college students who are from certain ethnic groups. Applicants must be African- American, Asian- American, Native- American, Hispanic- American, or Pacific Islanders who are currently enrolled as undergraduates at a U.S. institution. Applicants must also meet the following requirements: Demonstrate financial need, academic accomplishment and leadership ability, be involved in community/ extracurricular activities centered on multicultural or international issues, have already completed a minimum of 24 hours toward a degree, and submit required application materials. Eligible applications are reviewed by an independent committee of international educators and a recipient is selected.
The deadline for this scholarship is usually around March 15.

College Language Association (CLA) Study Abroad Scholarship
This scholarship is open to any student who is presently attending a CLA college or university. A CLA college or university is one where a member of the CLA is presently employed or is a retiree emeritus.

Preliminary eligibility requirements are as follows:
1) have at least six completed credits of language study;
2) have an overall GPA in the major/minor language of 3.0; 3) have an overall GPA of 2.5.

British Marshall Scholarship
This scholarship is awarded annually to up to forty young U.S. citizens, who are college graduates. The scholarships include tuition fees, a living allowance, fares between the United States and Britain, and a book grant. This is awarded for two years, and the recipients will be able to study a wide range of subjects for a further degree at any of Britain’s universities and business schools.

Fulbright U.S. Student Program
This award is for graduating seniors who wish to study abroad, but it is best to apply for it during your junior year since the competition begins in May and ends in October. Graduate students are also eligible.
As outlined by Senator Fulbright, the purpose of the program is threefold:
1) to promote mutual understanding through a commitment to the free flow of ideas and people across national boundaries
2) to expand, through this understanding, the boundaries of human wisdom, empathy and perception
3) to create true and lasting world peace through cooperation in constructive activities among people of different nations.
