2008 SUMMER SESSION
CLAFLIN UNIVERSITY UPWARD BOUND
The Claflin University Upward Bound will begin its summer session June 8, 2008 with an opening motivational Banquet and will end July 12, 2008 with a Cultural/Educational Trip. Participants come from eight high schools located in Orangeburg and Calhoun Counties. The specific target groups are students with academic potential who have just completed the eighth grade and who will continue in the program through high school graduation. The summer following high school graduation, students can earn at least six hours of college credit during the summer “Bridge component” of Upward Bound.
The program provides intensive college preparation, academic advising and other social, cultural and educational activities. Students may qualify several ways. They may fall into the economic guidelines established by the Department of Education, and/or they may be a “first-generation” student. A “first-generation” student is one whose parents have not completed a four-year degree program at a college or university. A student may also qualify because of a learning or physical disability.
Upward Bound is a federally funded program sponsored by the United States Department of Education. Therefore, there is no cost to the student or to the family. The program pays all costs involved for participation. During the day, students attend academic and fine arts classes. Academic classes include: Science (Biology, Chemistry and Physics), Mathematics Reading/SAT & ACT Preparation, foreign Language (Spanish or French), Social Studies, and Study Skills. The Fine Arts classes include: Art, Band Chorus, Dance and Drama. In the evening hours there is organized recreation and social activities.

The Claflin University Upward Bound Math/Science Regional Center, also known as the PRISM (Pursuing Rewards In Science and Mathematics) Program serves fifty-eight high school students from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee in a five-weeks residential summer program. The mission of the program is to increase the number of scientists and mathematicians from first-generation, low-income backgrounds by providing accelerated and intensified learning and developmental experiences that will facilitate the participants’ enrollment in college and pursuit of these careers.
The 2008 summer session will begin on June 8, 2008 and end on July 12, 2008. Academic courses, career awareness experiences, self-development activities, and tutorial assistance are provided in a supportive and nurturing environment. The participants are involved in improving their critical thinking skills, studying geometry through calculus, and writing scientific research papers. They are also enrolled in basic Latin and biology, chemistry or physics. The faculty incorporates technology-based instructional strategies that enhance the participants’ learning process and also contributes toward the decrease of the technology gap existing in our society. The participants are also engage in a mentoring program with professional mentors with careers in math and science related areas.
Career seminars featuring community professionals will be presented. Shadowing of career professionals allows the senior students to experience actual work environments of their chosen career field. Students also complete a science or math research project and present their results in a culminating research symposium. Weekly career oriented field trips as well as the culminating trip are planned.
