Claflin's Freshmen FAQ’S

What are your minimum requirements for admissions?
English 4 units, Math 3 units (2 must be Algebra), Science 2 units, Social Studies 2 units and Electives 9 units.

What is the average SAT/ACT score for your freshman class?
The average score for incoming freshman is 900.

What criteria do you take in consideration when evaluating a student?
The course selection and rigor of courses.

Where and when do I sign up for the SAT/ACT?
Contact your Senior Guidance Counselor at your high school.

When will you receive my SAT/ACT score?
1 month after taking the test.

When do I sign up for housing?
Once you been accepted.

Can I have a private room?
No.

Do I have to live on campus?
No, but it is highly recommended for first year students.

When is the application deadline?
Claflin University accepts students until registration. (Rolling)

Are interviews important and how much do they count?
Yes, but not required.

What is the tuition payment plan?
Contact the Business Office at 803-535-5492.

How will I be notified of a decisions?
By mail.

What kind of financial aid is available?
Federal and State funds, as well as grants and loans.

What can I expect in the way scholarship?
To be considered for The Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College, the student must have a minimum SAT score of 1000 in the critical reading and math, ACT composite of 22 and a GPA of 3.0 or higher. Also the student is required to submit a personal statement (at least 350 words), student resume and at least three letters of recommendation. Please know that the Honors College process is both selective and competitive.

What advance placement test can I get credit for?
Any AP Exam you take in high school and score a 3 or higher.

How strong is your pre-med program?
Claflin has a very strong program biology pre-med.

What is a good major if I’m going to law school?
English, Criminal Justice, Political Science.

Can my application fee be waived?
Yes.

When can I meet my academic advisor?
During registration.

How many hours does it take to graduate?
It takes a minimum of 131 hours to graduate.

What are the requirements for foreign students and can they get financial aid?
See admission criteria.

Do I have to take a foreign language to be accepted?
No, but highly recommended.

Do I have to take a foreign language in college?
Yes, 6 credit hours.

Can I have a double major?
Yes.

Must I audition for the music department?
You do not have to audition for admissions; however is required for music scholarship.

Does the art department require a portfolio?
Yes.

What is your Greek life like?
It is very active on our campus.

What are your office hours?
Our office hours are Monday – Friday from 8:00 am – 5:00 pm.

When can I visit and get a tour of the campus?
Campus visit can be scheduled Monday – Friday, except major holidays.

Are there hotels close to your college?
Contact the Office of Admissions for a complete listing of area hotels.

How may I transfer to your school?
Have official college transcripts sent to Claflin University for evaluation. Be in good academic standing. If less than 30 semester hours has been earned the applicant must submit an official high school transcript, SAT or ACT, high school final GPA and rank in graduating class. Final 30 semester hours must be completed at Claflin.

I requested information two weeks ago and haven’t gotten it. Why?
First, we need to check to make sure we have your correct mailing address on file.

If I want to play a sport, who do I contact?
Contact the Athletic Department at 803-535-5504.

May I request a specific roommate?
Yes.

Where is the closest bank?
Bank of America, along with an ATM located in Campus Center on campus.

Can I challenge my rejection for admissions?

Are freshman allowed to have cars?
No.

Do you have a housing problem?
No.

What kind of student services do you provide?
The Freshman College, The SOAR Center, Student Support Services, College Counseling Center, Career Placement Center and the Disability Enhancement Office.

What is there to do on the weekends at your school?
Weekends are quiet. The Office of Student Activities do schedule activities on some weekends for students.

How many out of state students?
There are approximately 150 students from out of state enrolled at Claflin University.

What majors do you offer?
Claflin University offers 33 undergraduate majors from our four different schools. We have a School of Business, School of Education, School Humanities and Social Sciences and School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics.

When is the deadline for your housing deposit?
Yes, that is determined based on when you are actually accepted.

Are you a party school?
No.

Where do I eat on campus?
The cafeteria and The Paw located in the Student Center.

What kind of organizations do you have?
There are over 40 social, fraternal, academic and service groups on campus.

Where do I get my mail?
The campus mailroom located in the Student Center of the Living and Learning Center.

Are there telephones in the rooms?
Yes.

Do I have to purchase a meal card?
No, if you are boarding student it is issued with your student ID.

Do you have coed dorms?
No.

How many students do you have?
Claflin University has approximately 1800 students.

What is your student to teacher ratio?
We have a 14:1 student to teacher ratio.

Are you a liberal or conservative school?
Claflin University is a liberal arts university.

Are you public or private?
We are a private institution.

Do you have a diverse campus?
Very diverse! We have students from 24 states and 14 foreign countries.

How many minority students do you have?
Our minority student population is approximately 2%.
