How to Find & Maximize an Internship

Getting an internship at a company that you have targeted as a possible future employer is a great way to experience what that company’s corporate personality is like and how well it may suit you. Lots of companies like the opportunity internships provide in terms of training future employees and, often, at these companies, when suitable jobs become available, interns get first shot at them.

Ideally, the internships enable students to:

• Acquire practical and meaningful work experience.
• Improve their verbal and written communications skills.
• Identify and/or test their interests and talents.
• See if their selected career path is the one they truly wish to travel.
• Determine whether their interests match their skills.
• Learn day-to-day businesses functions.
• Find out what it’s like to work full-time every day in a business environment.
• Increase their marketability and value to employers.

How to Find an Internship:

• Research potential internship opportunities
• Career and job fairs - Large program that allows you to meet and talk briefly with many employers
• On-campus interviewing - where recruiters from companies visit college campuses specifically to interview students for internship opportunities
• Alumni career network - Alumni and/or professionals who share your occupational interests
• Job listings available from national databases, newspaper classifieds, and on specific employer websites
