Planned Giving

Bequest (as part of a Will)

The bequest is one of the most frequent forms of planned giving to Claflin University. A gift by will may be made as an outright gift which specifies a certain amount of money or a percentage of your estate or as a restricted gift which specifies how the gift is to be used. Which ever form of bequest you choose, it is not subject to estate or inheritance taxes and so significantly reduces the tax burden of an estate. In large estates, this means a full estate tax deduction. In more modest estates, this means a donor can make a larger gift than would have been possible in one’s lifetime.

The bequest features include:

  • full tax deduction
  • the option of specifying a sum, asset, percentage, remainder, contingency, or amount governed by estate tax savings

The typical donor:

  • tends to be older
  • wants flexibility so gift won’t take effect during lifetime
  • wants to determine how assets will be used
