Type of University: Independent, four-year, Private not-for-profit, Liberal Arts University affiliated with The United Methodist Church.
History: Founded in 1869, Claflin University is the oldest historically black college or university in South Carolina. It is also the first college in the state to welcome all students regardless of race or gender.
Faculty: 121 full-time teaching faculty with 80 % holding terminal degrees in their fields.
Student/Faculty Ratio: Student-faculty ratio: 14:1.
Academic Year: Fall and spring semesters and a summer session.
Undergraduate and Graduate Enrollment: 1946 students are enrolled with 34% male and 66% female from 45 South Carolina counties, 26 states and 17 countries.
Academic Programs: The University offers broad based education in liberal arts and sciences combined with internships and other career-focused programs. There are 33 traditional undergraduate majors organized in four schools including the School of Education, the School of Humanities and Social Sciences, the School of Business and the School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics. The university also provides two adult learner majors through its Professional and Continuing Studies programs. The university also offers master’s degrees in Biotechnology and Business Administration (MBA).
Cost: 2012-2013 tuition and fees: $14,328. Room and board: $8,040-$10,060. These amounts are set annually by the Board of Trustees.
Financial Aid: 96% of full-time students attending Claflin receive some form of financial aid. Need-based scholarships, grants, loans and work-study programs are available for eligible students.
Student Services: Comprehensive programs in personal, health, career, and placement counseling.
Housing: Sixteen Residence Halls, including 12 for women and 4 for men, accommodating about 1,179 students (386 males and 721 females.)
ROTC: Claflin University’s School of Education offers an Air Force ROTC program on campus. Claflin graduates who complete the R.O.T.C. program (a cross enrollment agreement with South Carolina State University) may be commissioned as second lieutenants in the U.S. Army.
Intercollegiate Sports: The University holds membership in NCAA Division II and the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference for student-athletes. Men’s teams include compete in basketball, baseball, tennis, track and field and cross country and women’s teams consist of basketball, softball, volleyball, track and field and cross country.
Location: Claflin University’s historic 46-acre campus is located in Orangeburg, South Carolina, about 40 miles south of Columbia.
