Claflin University, founded in 1869, is the oldest historically black college or university in the State of South Carolina. In the 2008 Guidebook published by US News and World Report, Claflin University was rated in the “Top Tier” for the tenth consecutive year among Baccalaureate Colleges in the South and was also ranked for the Third Highest Graduation Rate in the South.
DEPARTMENT OF MUSIC: The Claflin University Department of Music is an institutional member of the National Association of Schools of Music (NASM). Its degree requirements are in accordance with the latest published regulations of the association. The department is also accredited by the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE).
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach applied piano to majors and possibly non-majors, class piano, and accompanying. The candidate will accompany both vocal and instrumental students in recital, juries, seminars, lessons, and rehearsals; accompany the University Concert Choir and other vocal organizations; and play for all University convocations when needed. The assignment may also include serving as pianist for the Wind Ensemble or String ensemble, and other duties as assigned. The candidate is expected to participate fully in departmental recruitment activities and promote the Department within the state and nationally. Other responsibilities include student advisement, serving on committees, grantsmanship, and research obligations consistent with all faculty appointments.
QUALIFICATIONS: A graduate degree in Accompanying, Piano or Music Education is required; a completed doctorate is required for a tenure-track appointment and rank of Assistant Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to continue a research agenda and participate in service activities. Ability to teach in a secondary area such as music technology, applied lessons and group piano is desirable.
RANK AND SALARY: Commensurate with qualifications and experience, pending funding.
