Claflin University Friends Of Earth

Claflin University Friends of Earth grew from a class project in Dr. Barbara McIver’s honors English class in 1998. The first president was named Eartha McFadden. Conceived of as a forum for addressing environmental issues across the disciplines, Friends of Earth became an official Claflin University organization in 2000.
The group has participated in the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources Beach Sweep/River Sweep since 1998 and adopted a highway in 2001. Other activities include America Recycles and Earth Day observations, Orangeburg County Pride clean-up, freshman assembly programs, and paper recycling on campus.
The organization has won two awards: Outstanding 2001 Adopt-A-Highway Group from Central Orangeburg County, and second place in the Collegiate Cleanup Challenge for Orangeburg County Pride Week in 2005.
Mission Statement:
To increase campus involvement and awareness of issues concerning the environment, resulting in conservation and service to the community. The Friends of the Earth Club (FOE) strives to make Claflin University, the town of Orangeburg and the State of South Carolina at large a “Greener” place to live and visit.
Faculty sponsors/Advisors are Mrs. Florence Anoruo Dr. Courtney Howard, and Dr. Barbara McIver.
