Faculty, Staff or Student of the Month
The School of Humanities and Social Sciences is beginning a new series to show appreciation for the accomplishments of outstanding faculty, staff and student in the School.
Each month we will select a faculty, staff or member of the School who demonstrates excellence, professionalism, and outstanding service; this individual will be featured on our web page.
Mr. David Eikerenkoetter just had a very successful Senior Citizen' s Appreciation Program He has produced these type of programs for 14 years; therefore, he is being recognized as the School of Humanities and Social Sciences faculty for the month of November, 2008 for his accomplishments.
Mr. David Eikerenkoetter is being recognized for his work in Gerontology in preparing students to work with the elderly and to bring more awareness and appreciation to the contributions for senior citizens. For the last 14 years, he has held a Senior Citizens Awareness and Appreciation Day to celebrate our elderly in Orangeburg and surrounding communities.
Each year hundreds of senior citizens attend.
CONGRATULATIONS!
Mr. Eikerenkoetter is a member of the advisory board at OCAB senior companion program. He was recently appointed to the ethics board of our new PACE program (all inclusive care for the elderly) associated with The Oaks. Director Elaine Till says the work over the last fourteen years with Mr. Eikerenkoetter is mutually beneficial to Claflin and The Oaks.
Mr. Eikerenkoetter continues to work with the Office of Career Development assisting students getting into graduate school.
ABOUT SCAAD
A group of students in gerontology met, organized, formed and founded SCAAD. The purpose was to create a program that would set standards and prepare students to work with the elderly and to demonstrate understanding, awareness, respect, and appreciation for senior citizens. At Claflin, students have received and are receiving excellent training in gerontology and are now working in adult day services, the aging services network, assisted living, and continuing care retirement communities.
Planned Senior Citizens Program in October over three hundred (300) in attendance. Workshops and Seminars.

Senior Citizens Thanksgiving and Christmas Program.
- Spoke at several churches in the Orangeburg community on Senior Citizens issues.
- Spoke at Social Security Office for Black History Month Observation.
- Spoke at high school Black History Month program in Jasper County, South Carolina.
- Spoke at Freshman College Assembly Program at Claflin University.
- Principal fundraiser for SCAAD and the Senior Citizens Banquet.
- Who’s Who Among Americas Teachers 2007, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2002.
- Awarded recognition and service award for twenty five years of service to Claflin University by President Henry N. Tisdale.
- Recognized by AARP for outstanding service to community and seniors 2007-2008.
- Present paper on Rural Blacks and Alzheimer’s to the Association of Black Sociologists in the summer of 2008 in Boston, Massachusetts at the 38th annual Association of Black Sociologists.
- Provide tutoring and mentorship to young African-American males. (Certificate)
- Spoke at Edward Waters College in the social work department during Spring Break March 2008 (Jacksonville, Florida)
- Sponsor Breast Cancer Awareness Program in Ridgeland and Orangeburg, South Carolina.
