History:
The Claflin University’s Student Affiliate Chapter of the American
Chemical Society (CUSAACS) was established and accredited in 2002.
This organization, which started with about 10 student members, has
grown to over seventy students from diverse majors. More than fifty
percent of these students are national members of the American Chemical
Society. Under the leadership of the chapter advisor, Dr. Angela Peters,
CUSAACS continues to engage in activities that encourage the study
of science on and off campus. These activities include Chemistry Awareness
Week, Elementary and Middle school visits, High school recruitments,
and diverse community service projects (clothes drive, food drive,
clean-ups, etc.). The dedication and commitment of the members of
CUSAACS earned the chapter the highest honor bestowed on any student
affiliate chapter – Outstanding Chapter for 2002 – 2003.
CUSAACS meets twice a month to discuss projects and organize events
on-campus. Members are sponsored to attend yearly regional and national
conferences to present any research that they have done. These conferences
also provide CUSAACS members an opportunity to meet with other student
affiliate chapters and network with professors and professionals in
various fields. In addition to working hard to serve our campus community,
CUSAACS members build strong friendships and have a lot of fun. Pizza
parties, end-of-year parties and
ice cream socials are not uncommon events on the planner of this prestigious
organization.
