Excellence in STEM

We're proud of our strong track record of attracting students to the STEM fields and preparing them for exciting careers, but it doesn't stop there. We have many, many more plans.

Claflin's unique dedication to the STEM disciplines (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) is evidenced by the programs we have developed and the initiatives we have undertaken to foster interest and excellence in these subjects:

New Bachelor of Science in Nursing

Claflin University’s growing reputation in STEM reaches an historic milestone as we launch our Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program beginning in the 2016 Fall semester. The Registered Nurse (RN) to Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program will be offered only to registered nurses who have obtained an associate’s degree in nursing. By instituting the program, Claflin becomes the only HBCU (Historically Black College/University) in the state of South Carolina to offer a bachelor’s degree in nursing.

Integration of NASA related Science, Research and Activities in STEM Curriculum

In conjunction with NASA and Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical College, Claflin University has developed an innovative program designed to accomplish the following goals:

  • To increase students’ skill sets in analytical reasoning and knowledge acquisition in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) related disciplines
  • To provide opportunities for under-represented STEM students to be exposed to applied experiences in NASA themed mathematics and science
  • To infuse research and project management skills in the STEM curriculum through the undergraduate research program
  • Expected outcomes of the program include improved skills in analytical reasoning and critical thinking and increased knowledge and understanding of NASA-related research concepts and skills.

Upward Bound Math and Science (UBMS)

Claflin University's Upward Bound Math and Science Regional program is a federally funded TRIO Program that helps students overcome academic, cultural, and social barriers to higher education in science and math related areas. UBMS provides a highly focused learning experience in science and mathematics for students with sharp minds and can-do spirits.

South Carolina Center for Biotechnology

Claflin is home to the South Carolina Center for Biotechnology, where world renowned researcher Dr. Omar Bagasra serves as director. The Center has assembled a massive portfolio of research projects since opening in 2005, tackling such issues as HIV/AIDS, cancer, organ transplantation and diabetes. Prospective students of the Master of Biotechnology program are eligible for full tuition and a monthly stipend through the U.S. Department of Education.

Health Careers and Other Special Programs

The Departments of Biology and Chemistry work closely with the South Carolina Alliance for Minority Participation, the South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, the Savannah River Site, the USDA and Forest Service Field Station, the Experimental Programs to Stimulate Cooperative Research, the Claflin Honors College and the Claflin Center for Excellence in Science and Mathematics to make paid summer internships, academic-year paid research assistantships, publication opportunities and other professional associations available to students. Special preparation for graduate and professional school admissions tests (e.g., GRE, DAT, MCAT, PCAT, etc.) is also available, as are a limited number of paid laboratory assistantships. The School of Natural Sciences and Mathematics has its own Pre-Health Professions Advisory Committee to assist students planning to enter the health professions.

STEM Camp for Girls

Claflin University’s School of Education is hosting a five‐day Summer STEM Camp for twenty rising 6th and 7th grade female students. The goal of the camp is to increase the number of females in the Orangeburg area who are interested in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) careers by integrating science and technology with a hands‐on approach.
