DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES

The primary responsibility of the Academic and Student Support Services Counselor/Workforce and Co-op Specialist position is to advise, instruct, and prepare students for employment opportunities (part-time/ full time) and co-op assignments.  The main focus will be to assist students in obtaining employment and co-op related to their majors, to serve as a liaison with employment agencies, and to participate in planning and implementing a successful program.  Responsible for supporting the Career Development Center by writing grant proposals and reports, develop promotional materials, and promote program campus-wide. Initiate and maintain ongoing personal contacts with a variety of business and industry representatives and job placement/training agencies to promote the Office of Career Development and Claflin University through employment and co-op education.

Employer relations are vital to the success of this position. Responsible for initiating contact with external employers to promote a comprehensive array of career development services to maximize students’ employment needs while adhering to their educational goal attainment and learning experiences.  Have a keen understanding of the needs of agencies, industry, and the local community to foster development opportunities and site visits.   Be familiar with effective program procedures in identifying and securing placement sites for students and developing partnerships with private, local, state, and federal agencies involved in employment development and placement programs while monitoring student success.

QUALIFICATIONS

Bachelor’s degree required and a minimum of two years of experience that is directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified. Successful candidate must have excellent project management skills, including research, organizational and time management abilities; exceptional communication and presentation skills; and excellent critical thinking and analytical skills.  Experience working in a University setting with faculty, students, in addition, to granting-writing experience is strongly preferred
