DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Assistant Vice President for Major and Planned Gifts, the Director of Development/Proposal Writer is responsible for providing senior level/administrative support to overseeing the writing of proposals and has primary responsibility for identifying and cultivating relationships with prospects and donors. Prepares, tracks and/or manages the submission process for proposals, in addition to providing consultation and support for grant-writing activities sought by the Division of Institutional Advancement. Works with the advancement staff, volunteers, alumni and other Claflin administrators and faculty in writing proposals; designing cultivation and solicitation strategies and ensuring follow-up activities and stewardship to funded proposals. Performs other duties as may be assigned by the Assistant Vice President for Major and Planned Gifts or Vice President for Institutional Advancement.

| QUALIFICATIONS
A master’s degree is highly desired. Bachelor’s degree in related field required with 3-5 years of experience in proposal and/or grant writing (federal, state and/or local) is highly desirable. The Director of Development/Proposal Writer must have demonstrated managerial and administrative skills, aptitude for staff development and be a team player; proven interpersonal, oral and written communications and organizational skills; a strong marketing orientation; a good working knowledge of computerized systems (preferably the Blackbaud and Jenzabar Systems); high energy level with imaginative and entrepreneurial approach to fundraising; at least 3-5 years of demonstratively successful experience in proposal and/or grant writing with a strong background in advancement services and the communications area in a private institution of higher learning. The successful candidate must be available to travel.
