Claflin University has tapped a veteran coach with vast experience in molding championship-caliber teams and a young, energetic motivator, recruiter and teacher to lead its men’s and women’s basketball programs, respectively. Athletics Director Dr. Jerome Fitch announced Wednesday that Scott Monarch was named the head men’s basketball Coach and Deont’a McChester will lead the women’s program.

Claflin University held its 143rd Commencement Convocation Saturday, conferring more than 350 undergraduate and graduate degrees. U.S. Congressman James E. Clyburn was the keynote speaker. In his commencement address, he urged students to "never give up!"

She takes flying lessons. She drives a sports car. She travels the world. Her philosophy is “Go ahead and do it!” Her name is Dr. Clemmie B. Hatchett and she’s 91 years old. Hatchett is among the four living members of the Claflin University Class of 1943 who will receive special recognition during the institution’s Commencement Convocation on Saturday, May 11 for reaching the 70th anniversary of their graduation.

Soon-to-be Claflin graduate Jasmine Benjamin said the last four years have shaped her desire to become a leading political scholar. They have also provided Benjamin with the confidence to challenge herself academically. It’s an ability that will serve well as she begins pursuit of a doctorate in American politics on a full scholarship from the University of Chicago this fall.
