Claflin Out-Slugs Miles in SIAC Tounament Action
Albany, GA- The Claflin University Panthers (23-20) the fifth seed defeated the Miles College Bears (22-17) 10-8 the sixth seed, in the first game of the 2011 SIAC baseball tournament, held at the Paul E. Eames Complex in Albany GA.
The start of the Baseball Championship was delayed, until 1:00 pm, because of severe weather in the Albany GA area.
Claflin scored 10 runs on 11 hits with 3 errors. While Miles scored 8 runs on 9 hits with six errors. Dillon Thomas (4-1) was credited with the win in relief of Darius Gilliam. Brad McWilliams (8-6) took the loss for Miles.
Each team had one big inning. Claflin’s was the first when the Panthers scored four runs on three hits and three Bears’ errors. The Bears turned the tide and took the lead with a six run top of the second, as ten batters went to the plate. And scored six suns for a 6-4 lead.
Leading hitters for the Bears were; Patrick Melvin 2-5, 3rbi, Jeffery Jones 2-2, an rbi, and 2 runs scored, and Anthony Jones 2-2, with and rbi and 2 runs scored.
Donald Smith led the Panthers at the plate going 3-4, with 2 runs scored and 2 rbi. Fedor Herrera went 1-4 with 2 rbi, and a run scored. And Edward Randolph went 1-4 with 2 rbi.
The loss drops Miles into the losers’ bracket and plays Friday morning at 10:00 am.
The win advances Claflin in the winners’ bracket, and continues toward the 2011 SIAC championship at 1:00 pm Friday.
