Nov 01, 2011

Leighann A. Black will be officially introduced as Miss Claflin 2011-2012 during a special coronation ceremony titled “A Night in Paradise” on Monday, Oct. 31.

Black is heavily involved on the campus and in the community. Previously at Claflin, she has served as treasurer of the sophomore class and she chaired the junior class' fundraising committee. She also was a past president of the campus Honors Council. Currently, Black is the student vice president of the National Association of African-American Honors Programs.

This spring, her classmates elected her to serve as Miss Claflin 2011-2012. “It is a tremendous honor to serve as Miss Claflin 2011-2012. I look forward to representing the University and my fellow students by using my reign to make a positive difference,” Black said.

A native of Silver Springs, Maryland, she arrived at Claflin after receiving a Presidential Scholarship from the Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College. Black, 21, is the daughter of Lenworth and Ethline Black. She also has two sisters, Roxanne and Leslieann.

Her platform as Miss Claflin 2011-2012 is titled “Putting a Face to STDs within the College Community”.

The cause is a passion for Black, who plans to focus on educating the campus and community on the importance of sex education. Recently, Black and Miss Claflin 2010-2011 Ariel Manning returned from a National Advocates for Youth conference in Washington, D.C. that aims to improve sexual health education and curb teenage pregnancy. Black is a member of Students With A Responsible Message (SWARM) Council, an organization focus on sexual health education for youth.

A biochemistry major, Black will attend medical school to study anesthesiology after graduating Claflin this spring. In her spare time, she enjoys reading, playing the piano, attending church and spending time with family and friends.

The Miss Claflin 2011-2012 Coronation Ceremony will start at 7 p.m. in the W.V. Middleton Fine Arts Center. For more information, please contact Allison Sabb-Glenn, program coordinator for community service and service learning, by phone at (803) 535-5466 or by e-mail at
