Claflin University Board of Trustees member Michael Brenan received the United Way of the Midlands Humanitarian of the Year Award on Feb. 28 in Columbia.
Brenan, who is the chairman of Claflin’s Capital Campaign Corporate Committee, is the president of Branch Banking & Trust of South Carolina. He was elected to the Claflin Board of Trustees in 2009.
The Columbia resident is heavily involved with many civic, business and educational organizations in the state.
Brenan is currently chairman of the S.C. Chamber of Commerce and is a past chair of the Greater Columbia Chamber, where he was instrumental in strengthening the city’s public transportation system.
He is a past chair of several entities including the University of South Carolina Darla Moore School of Business Partnership Foundation, South Carolina Bankers Association, United Way of the Midlands, United Way Association of South Carolina, South Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities and is chair-elect of the Governor’s School for Science and Mathematics Foundation. And he is currently the vice chair of the Central South Carolina Alliance and Gov. Nikki Haley’s appointee to the state's Board of Education.
In addition, Brenan holds memberships with the Midlands Business Leadership Group, Midlands Housing Alliance, Clemson University President’s Advisory Council and Trinity Forum.
He is married to Julie Wyatt and they have four children: Erin, Andrew, Rob and Molly.
