Claflin University has been announced as a finalist in The Home Depot’s 2013 RETOOL YOUR SCHOOL campus improvement grant program.
Finalists are competing for $225,000 in grants for on-campus improvements. Claflin is seeking support from the campus and public to help the University win.
Until April 15, Claflin supporters can visit www.retoolyourschool.com to vote for sustainable campus improvement projects.
One $50,000 Tier 1 major grant, 12 Tier 2 $10,000 minor grants and one $25,000 Campus Pride for the school receiving the most online votes and social media activity, as assessed by The Home Depot, will be awarded. The Home Depot will announce the winners on May 3.
“We encourage the entire Claflin family to vote early and often in The Home Depot’s RETOOL YOUR SCHOOL contest,” said President Dr. Henry N. Tisdale. “This grant funding could greatly improve the daily campus life for faculty, staff and, most importantly, our visionary students.”
With the potential funding, Claflin has proposed to modify the entrance to Trustee Hall for easier access for the disabled. In addition, the University hopes to install its first rainwater collection system on the roof of Kleist Hall to conserve water for a fountain, and establish eco-friendly gardens to enhance campus biodiversity.
Claflin will face stiff competition from finalist schools in Alabama, Arkansas, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and the District of Columbia.
University supporters can vote once a day until the contest closes April 15.
