Students counting down the hours until Homecoming

Nov 08, 2013

The Panther

The countdown to Panther Town is underway.

11 ... 10 ... From Nov. 10-17, Claflin University will host its annual Homecoming festivities. Alumni, artists and everyone in between will be welcomed on the campus greens of the HBCU to reconnect, reminisce and rejoice with classmates and colleagues, past and present.

9 … .8 ….Planned events for the week include the "How Sweet the Sound" computation featuring Joshua Rogers and the Claflin University Gospel Choir "DREAM."

7 ... 6 ... R&B recording artist Melanie Fiona will headline this year's concert and comedian Benji Brown will be featured at this year's laugh fest.

5… 4 ... Signature strolls and rhythmic routines will also be on display at the annual Greek Step Show.

3 … 2 … There is still time to make plans to join us at this year's Claflin Family Reunion. Combo tickets are available and can be purchased online this year.

Ahead of the festivities, Claflin Interim Assistant Vice President of Communications Charlene Slaughter briefed multimedia students on Homecoming 2013 and her mission of spreading the word.

“My job is to make sure that I use all forms of media outlets to inform students, faculty and staff of what events are taking place at Claflin University,” Slaughter said.

Homecoming being among the biggest of events each year, the emphasis for Slaughter and her team is getting the word out to students and alumni – and beyond. “We are trying to target the community too,” she said.

Slaughter said homecoming involves a lot of planning.

SGA and SAB come up with homecoming event ideas, which must fall within a budget and also meet Claflin standards, she said. “We try to look at what took place the previous year to see what worked, what didn’t work and try to come up with homecoming events that could please students.”

In 2012, the student ball was not a very popular event and is not in the mix for 2013.

“We thought we would do some kind of outdoors carnival,” Slaughter said, saying the resulting event is Carnival on the Yard from 8-11 Friday night.

“Come out, join in on the festivities, it’s going to a lot of fun.” Slaughter said.
