Poetry Cafe on Nov. 12 was filled with hip-hop, R&B, poetry, snaps and claps.

Students participated in open mic night and had audience members yelling “rewind”! The lines had the audience calling to  hear the poetry over and over.

Courtnay the Poet and the NR Band along with a variety of other poets told their stories with rhythm and words.

“It’s always refreshing to know that I set out to do something and affect others with what I do,” Courtnay said.

A native of Awendaw, Courtnay has always loved performing and writing. It wasn’t until college that she went to a poetry event and decided that is what she wanted to do with her life.

“I do this for my race, black, and the urban kids to show them they can have a career outside of the box,” Courtnay said.

She expressed how people should not be afraid to speak out and not stay in the box society puts them in.

The art of poetry is still around, and continues to let people express their stories and reach out to others.
