Students of AmeriCorp's Saturday Academy loaded up in cars to head to local stores such as Walgreen's, Bi-Lo and Piggly Wiggly to kick off a day of service on Monday.

In honor of the national MLK Day, students asked customers as they entered stores to pick up canned goods or non-perishable items to donate to the less fortunate.

When asked how did being a part the day of service make students feel, Dahlia Mallett, junior, responded, "It's a great feeling. It always feels good to give back to people less fortunate than me."

Students collected more than 1,700 cans. All proceeds will be contributed to First Baptist Church of Orangeburg to make hot meals for the homeless and less-fortunate families of the community.
