Claflin Health Services

Good health is the key to success and Claflin University health Services is an  integral component of the campus community. Our mission is committed to promote quality health care by assisting students in identifying and managing their foremost health needs. The staff of health services includes one physician and a nurse who are available for medical| diagnosis of Claflin students. 

Available medical services include:

  • Primary medicine 
  • Nursing diagnosis
  • Managing common, acute and chronic illnesses

The Regional Medical Center, which is located near the campus, has facilities to treat illnesses of a more serious nature.

INSURANCE

All enrolled Claflin students are covered by health and accident insurance. The institution provides accident and sickness coverage for all full-time undergraduate students registered for the academic year. Students are covered from the first to the last date a student is required to be on campus. This health insurance is secondary. The student’s primary health insurance will be billed first by an outside healthcare provider that can handle the event of an emergency, accident, or sickness. Students are strongly recommended to have health insurance coverage. The Health Center will not be responsible for any claims or otherwise for treatment rendered by outside physicians not employed on the medical staff at Claflin University.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ON HEALTH CARE SYSTEM AT CLAFLIN

What do I get for my student health fee?
Your student health fee allows you to receive healthcare at the Student Health Center if you are a registered, full time undergraduate/graduate student.  It includes medical care for acute, ambulatory illnesses, minor injuries and for Claflin’s Counseling Services.  Services not covered under the health fee, such as certain procedures, medications and care provided outside of Student Health, will be your financial responsibility.

Does the school have an accident policy?
The institution provides accident and sickness coverage for all full time undergraduate students registered for the academic year. Students are covered from the first to the last date a student is required to be on campus.  Please understand this health insurance is secondary and your primary health insurance will be billed first, by an outside healthcare provider that can handle the event of an emergency accident or sickness.  Students are strongly recommended to have health insurance coverage.

Students should not assume they are covered under their parent’s policy and this information should be noted on their Medical History Health Form.  The Health Center will not be responsible for any degree, financial or other-wise, for treatment rendered by outside physicians not employed on the medical staff at Claflin.

APPOINTMENTS

How do I set up an appointment at the Student Health Center?
The service hours of the Health Center are Monday – Friday 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  An appointment time for allergy shots is required, otherwise walk-ins are welcome.

I’m…feeling homesick…having difficulties sleeping…eating too much or too little…having trouble studying.  What services can help me adjust to life at Claflin?
Claflin’s Counseling and Academic Student Support Services can provide free assessments, short term counseling and outreach programming to a full time student.  If you’re having difficulties in your process of transitioning, you can make an appointment to discuss the issues with a staff member.  Learn more about Counseling Services at (803) 535-5285 and Student Support Services at (803) 535-5280.

MEDICINES

Can I keep my medicines in my room that I bring from home?
Your medicines from home, either prescription drugs (provided from a pharmacist) with a specified quantity and dosage of the medication or over the counter drugs (medications that do not need a prescription) and can be purchased by anyone; can be kept in your room and taken by you as a responsible adult.  For safety reasons, it is important to tell any healthcare provided and the Student Health provider that you see about all of the medications and natural supplements that you are taking, regardless of whether you received these items in the United States or from your international home.

IMMUNIZATIONS

It cost too much…Do I really need the meningitis vaccine?
Yes, the meningococcal disease is a potentially life-threatening bacterial infection of the bloodstream or meninges (a thin lining covering the brain and spinal cord).  The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the American College Health Association (ACHA) recommends vaccination to all incoming college freshmen living in dormitories.

ALLERGY SHOTS

Can my child continue with allergy injections at the Student Health Center?
Yes, allergy injections may be received at the Student Health Center at Allergy Shot appointed physician time only.  Instructions from the allergist must specify the diagnosis (reason for shots), the type and concentration of the extract, the specific dose, injection schedule and any precautionary instructions.  Expiration date required and student is expected to reorder and pay for their own medication.

TRANSPORTATION

Can I get help from the Student Health Center after office hours?
The Health Center hours of operation are Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.  It is closed on weekends, semester breaks and holidays.  If living in the dormitory notify your Residential Assistant/Manager or notify Campus Police at (803) 535-5444.  If it is an emergency (life threatening, an illness or injury that could become worst if treatment were to be delayed) dial 911 or go to the Hospital (The Regional Medical Center), have someone else drive you.

I am hurting too bad to get to the Student Health Center.
You can call Claflin Police at (803) 535-5444 or the Health Center at (803) 535-5328, if you are unable to get there on your own.  If you are in your dorm room, notify your Residential Assistant/Manager.

INSURANCE AND BILLING

I saw a doctor and now I have multiple bills. Shouldn't my insurance cover this?
When you receive healthcare elsewhere, you will typically have to pay an initial fee to be seen and your insurance usually covers 50-80% of the remaining cost of your healthcare.  You will be responsible for paying the difference, which may be charged to you in a series of bills.
