Enjoy learning the English language in historic South Carolina, one of the original 13 colonies
of the United States. Claflin University was founded in 1869 and named in honor of Lee Claflin,
a prominent Methodist layman from Boston, and his son William Claflin, then governor
of Massachusetts. With “the only admission requirements for prospective students being
the possession of good moral character and a conscientious desire to learn,”
Claflin University offered, for the first time in South Carolina, quality higher education
for men and women “regardless of race, complexion, or religious opinion.”
Through our highly interactive program, students enrolled in Claflin University’s
Intensive English Language Program receive an intense 21 hours per week course schedule
in an intimate classroom environment with skillful, well-trained ESL instructors.
