<< Previous Picture Next Picture >>Claflin alumni and friends returned in record numbers to celebrate the 137th Homecoming and Founders’ Day Anniversary. Thousands of visiting alumni and friends applauded the ongoing transformation of the campus. The new chapel, under construction, is scheduled to be completed next month. Visitors marveled over the new façade and makeover of Mary E. Dunton Residence Hall for women. The little things that matter -- Orange and maroon snapdragons and pansies adorned plush flowerbeds while orange and maroon floral arrangements accessorized hallways and tabletops. Reunion Classes celebrated excellence “On a Hilltop High” and pledged continued support of their Alma Mater. Alumni and friends donated more than $500,000 during the Homecoming weekend. Many of these donors were recognized during the Leadership Giving Luncheon held Friday, November 18th. Later that evening, the Presidential Scholarship Gala, an annual sellout, topped the weekend of entertainment events with Cook, Dixon and Young (formerly of the Three Mo’ Tenors) performing delete. The trio’s opening acts were performances by Claflin University students, given rounds of applause as they provided a variety of music from classical to gospel to rhythm and blues. Twelve successful returning young alumni visited classrooms and participated in the Annual Images of Success program. The young alumni were recognized by President Tisdale during the annual Leadership Giving Luncheon. Also, among the many activities held during the weeklong celebration, were the Comedy Show sponsored by the Student Government Association; Young Alumni Dance; Homecoming Parade and Basketball Games; Greek Step Show; Orange and Maroon Ball and the Alumni Breakfast. The celebration concluded with the Founders’ Day Convocation held Sunday afternoon, November 19th. Claflin University honored two of its internationally acclaimed alumni during the ceremony: the batik artist, Dr. Leo F. Twiggs ‘56 and photojournalist and author, Mr. Cecil J. Williams ‘60. Both received the Bythewood Award. Dr. Shirley A.R. Lewis, President of Paine College, gave the keynote address. |
