From NBC to IBM to working in Washington, D.C., with the United States government, Claflin University students completed rewarding and productive internships this past summer.

Nearly 75 Claflin University students traveled across the country for internships in the fields of business, communications, education and science. With the assistance and leadership of academic deans and the Leadership Development Center, Claflin’s Office of Career Development has successfully placed students in prestigious internships, some of which lead to job offers.

Daniel Howard, a senior mass communications major at Claflin, completed his fourth summer internship at NBC this year. He was awarded the internship after graduating high school through the Emma L. Bowen Foundation, which provides internships to minority students interested in media. Howard’s duties included research and set-up of news stories, being involved in contacting various sources and arranging for the proper visuals and interviews appropriate for each story. He also worked on a special report about Wall Street, which required being persistent and thorough in trying to obtain certain interviews.

“All the stories and shows I worked on, I was able to see on television,” he said. “The people there respected my work. I was producing stories for the 5 p.m. news and worked on a Latin special. This year was interesting because it was the first time they’d ever had an intern work under the anchors at NBC. I was that intern.”

Howard also produced some shows and helped develop a pilot called “Four Corners” that NBC is moving forward with.

“I was putting information together, calling the shots on editing and how the music should be,” he said. “Having a show I helped NBC develop under my belt is pretty good. Internships are very important because you get work experience. In college you may be taught the basics, but you need experience in the real world. If you don’t have outside experience, you’re not going to be marketable. Internships show that you have intelligence in the field, you can work with people and have actually gotten your feet wet in your profession.”

The Claflin University Division of Student Development and Services, Office of Career Development, recently held its annual “Internship Rush.” Students attending learned of internships fellow students completed this past summer. Howard Jackson, coordinator of special programs in the Office of Career Development, told students they should pursue as many internships as possible.

“You need to gain exposure outside of the classroom,” Jackson told the attendees. “Apply for many internships. If you do that, you’re going to be in the position to decline internships.”

Curtis Chandler told of his experience interning with IBM in Charlotte. In addition to gaining a wealth of experience, Chandler said he earned $17 an hour over a 10 week period and received an offer to return next summer.

“It was a great opportunity and I experienced a lot,” he said. “I worked hand-in-hand with senior executives and sales managers. I learned how to build relationships. The main thing that the internship provided was good networking opportunities.”

Ja’Nel Johnson said she only knew David Justice as Halle Berry’s ex-husband when she saw him during her internship with Yankee Entertainment and Sports Network. She found out about the internship through Claflin’s Office of Career Development. A rising sophomore when she applied for her internship, she urged freshman not to be intimidated when considering applying.

“I was the youngest person there and the only person who just completed freshman year,” she said. “Even if you’re a freshman, apply for an internship anyway because you just might get it. I worked with the Yankees and met David Justice. I met players and worked in the Chrysler Building. I did a television show as a project and they actually want to make it a show for their network.”

Myla Chatman, a business administration major, completed an internship at the U.S. Department of Treasury in Washington, D.C. The experience may have landed her a job.

“I was paid $12.50 an hour, they paid for housing and paid for my arrival to Washington D.C.,” Chatman said. “They gave me $200 for travel throughout the city. The experience was great. I’m looking at a full time career opportunity with them.”

Accounting major Allen Jackson received an offer to complete another internship next summer at UNCF’s Fundraising Development Division. Jackson also received a $5,000 scholarship. Other students on the panel completing internships were Joslyn Davis, Education major, worked with children and adults with disabilities; Jaleisa Turner, Biology major, Department of Labor internship at Claflin University; Keaira S. Berry, Biology major, interned at the Export Program at Claflin University; and Farai Mwamuka, Finance major, UNCF/Oracle in Virginia.

Internships offer students relevant work experience as well as hands-on knowledge in their fields of study. Most majors at Claflin University require a completed internship. Many internships are available as early as the summer before sophomore year.
