Claflin University Business Administration major Ashley Brown has seen first hand the difference a United Negro College Fund scholarship can make.

Her two older sisters were recipients of UNCF Bill Gates Scholarships and graduated from UNCF schools. Their successes inspired Ms. Brown to attend a UNCF school, strive for academic excellence and pursue UNCF scholarships as well.

“I truly appreciate what UNCF has done for my sisters, my fellow colleagues and what UNCF has done for me,” Ashley Brown told audience members at Claflin University’s Sixth Annual UNCF Community Prayer Breakfast held this past Saturday in Tullis Arena. Ms. Brown, a UNCF scholar, has been the recipient of several UNCF scholarships.

The breakfast is held each year to raise money for Claflin’s UNCF campaign. This year, the university has been charged with raising $64,500. To date, Claflin has raised nearly $35,000. UNCF will contribute $30 for every dollar Claflin University raises. Dr. Iris Bomar, Claflin University Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement and UNCF Campus Coordinator, said the prayer breakfast continues to be a successful way to raise money for UNCF.

For 22 consecutive years, the University has conducted successful UNCF campaigns raising nearly $775,000 in funds for scholarships,” Dr. Bomar said. “Claflin University became a member institution of the United Negro College Fund in 1984 and each member institution is required to conduct an annual campaign.”

Speaker Dr. Sam Davis, Pastor of Beulah Grove Baptist Church in Augusta, Ga., gave a soul-stirring sermon encouraging guests to “know your value” and “learn how to appreciate yourself.”

“Your value is not in your hands,” Dr. Davis said. “Your value is in whose hands you’re in.”

The Reverend Leonard Huggins, Jr., Pastor of New Covenant United Methodist Church, served as Honorary Chairman of the Community Prayer Breakfast with the membership committee consisting of local clergy and community leaders. Members of other local churches, businesses, the community and Greek letter organizations and Claflin alumni also attended.

Dr. Henry N. Tisdale, Claflin University President, reminded audience members that the true purpose of raising money for UNCF is to make a difference in the lives of students as all students cannot afford to attend college. UNCF helps to bridge that gap.

“There are still young, bright deserving students who wouldn’t be in college if they didn’t have the support of UNCF,” Dr. Tisdale said. “There is still a barrier, but we are closing the education gap and making education affordable. We are lowering financial barriers. At Claflin University, we like to believe that in doing so, we are changing the lives of young people. We are saving the lives of young people.”

Dr. Tisdale thanked the many continuous supporters of Claflin University’s UNCF campaign.  He said the money is used to support some of the best and brightest students, build stronger faculty, gain more nationally accredited programs and have more cutting edge programs and research.

“You are helping us become America’s best college. More important, students receive a high quality education in a Christian environment,” he said.

Donations to Claflin University’s UNCF program continue to be accepted. All gifts are tax deductible and donors’ names will be included on the university’s regular list of donors. Contributions may be forwarded to Claflin University, Institutional Advancement Office, 400 Magnolia Street, Orangeburg, SC, 29116-4498.
