Virginia State defeats Claflin

Avis Wyatt scored 22 points with 16 coming in the first half for Virginia State (6-2) as they defeated Claflin University (4-6) 74-65. Michael Johnson chipped in 13 points, Jamar Flemming added 12 points for the victors.

Claflin was led by Ernest Sinkfield with 20 points, Jerome Starr added 18 points.

The Trojans led 39-28 at the half and by as many as 19 points at the 16:28 mark in the second half to make the score 49-30. The Trojans shot 59% from the field, 67% from behind the arc and 67% from the free-throw line.

Meanwhile, the Panthers shot 42% from the field, 24% from the three-point line and 67% from the free-throw line.

With the Panthers down by 14 points, 55-69 with 2:10 left they went on a 9-3 run to make the score 63-72 with :42 remaining. The Trojans held off the Panthers rally by making two free-throws in the last minute to preserve the win.
