Pantherettes Defeat Lady Golden Bulls in O.T. 75-68

  

Orangeburg, SC- The Pantherettes spoiled the homecoming for Brittany Sumter and the Lady Golden Bulls of Johnson C. Smith University, 75-68, in overtime.

 

The Pantherettes of Claflin University kept the Lady Golden Bulls off balance, with their match-up zone. While offensively the Pantherettes had balanced scoring with four players in double figures. Ashley Sorrell-Gibson led CU with 19 points, Jayshaun Bailey, and Latoya Savage added 17 points each, as Chevon Howell contributed 10 points. CU shot the ball well in the game as they connected on 43% of their shots from the field, and 79% from the free throw line.

 

The Lady Golden Bulls were led by Brittany Sumter with a game high 25 points and Shemika Jones followed with 13 points. Johnson C. Smith shot 35% for the game from the field and 67% from the free throw line.

 

The Pantherettes controlled the first half as the Lady Golden Bulls could only muster a two point lead once in the early going, 6-8 with 31:17 to go in the half. CU’s greatest advantage was 9 points 18-9 at the 7:37 mark. Claflin went into halftime leading 24-20.

 

The second half was a see-saw battle as the Lady Golden Bulls knotted the score at 33 with 13:46 left to play, in regulation. The score would be tied at 35. The Pantherettes went on a 10-3 run to lead 45-38 with 7:50 left. The Lady Golden Bulls took advantage of time remaining to match CU’s run to tie the score at 51, with 3:02 left in regulation. Each team traded baskets the remainder of regulation as time expired, with the score knotted at 58.

 

The Pantherettes took advantage of overtime as they shot 100% from the field and was 1-1 from behind the arc, and 80% from the line 10-14. The Pantherettes scored the first point in overtime as Jayshaun Bailey made good on 1-2 free throws. From that point on the Pantherettes built an 11 point lead 75-64 with :46 left in O. T. Claflin went on the cruise to victory 68-75.

 

The Pantherettes will be in action on January 8, 2007 as they host the Hornets of Morris College at 6:00 p.m.
