Claflin University Black History

National TRIO Day Celebration and Step Show

We are really excited about the Claflin University Black History National TRIO Day Celebration and Step Show.  We are extending to students this special invitation to participate in this annual event on February 24, 2007, at 9:00 a.m., in the Jonas T. Kennedy Health and Physical Education Center.

Phase I will consist of a formal program beginning at 9:00 a.m. highlighting the achievements and successes of former TRIO scholars.  Get ready for Phase II in the first annual “American TRIO Idol Competition.” Students can deliver a dramatic speech, poem, dance, song, reading, fashion, musical selection, etc. relating to Black History or TRIO Programs.  This phase will be judged and trophies will be awarded.  Each act should last no longer than three minutes and there will be a timer.

Phase III, Stepping Back Into Black History, will begin at approximately 2:00 p.m. This is the most popular activity and will be a step routine and a tribute to any famous African American person(s) or event(s).  This phase will be judged and trophies will be awarded.  The step routine should last no longer than 10 minutes. We encourage students  to participate by performing in at least one of the activities in Phase II or III or both if they wish.

If you plan to participate, please let us know what type of performance or activity you are offering by calling 803-268-1137.

We will be serving lunch at 12:30 p.m. at a cost of $4.25 per person.  Please make reservations by February 15, 2007   If you plan to eat on campus, checks should be made payable to Sodexho-Marriott, Claflin’s food service vendor.

We look forward to your cooperation and support with this program.

For additional information, contact Mrs. Gwendolyn Phillips at (803) 268-1137 or gphillips@claflin.edu.
