Dr. Henry N. Tisdale, President of Claflin University, and the Rev. Dr. Charles B. Jackson, Sr., Pastor of Brookland Baptist Church, signed a Memorandum of Understanding on February 7th at Brookland Baptist Church in West Columbia, SC to launch a collaborative project to bring a Professional and Continuing Studies higher education program to the campus of Brookland.
The signing ceremony was well attended by members of Brookland, community leaders and political representatives as well as Claflin University faculty, staff and alumni.
Speaking to those assembled, Rev. Jackson said, “This is an opportunity of a lifetime for Brookland Baptist Church and we are happy to join Claflin in this partnership for higher education. My prayer is that this will serve as both an inspiration and a motivation for the two institutions to come together on common ground to work together to make shining strides.”
President Tisdale re-enforcing Rev. Jackson’s comments added that both Claflin and Brookland are proud to be rooted in Christianity. “We value the spiritual, the intellectual and our special relationship." The president stated further that both institutions had humble beginnings and a vision sustained by a faithful few. “The founders of both institutions will be proud of Claflin and Brookland because we are reaching out and back and helping our brothers and sisters achieve and seek a better quality of life."
The academic curriculum will provide non-traditional continuing education opportunities for individuals twenty-two years of age and older who have completed at least one and one half years of college, enabling them to work towards a bachelor's degree in either Organizational Management or Sociology/Criminal Justice Administration. The partnership agreement will allow for the expansion of educational offerings to include additional areas of study.
The program couples with Brookland’s goal to offer not only spiritual guidance for congregants and residents of West Columbia, but to create educational ties with Claflin University, nationally recognized for its accredited academic programs and high graduation rate.
Brookland Baptist Church, with more than 60 ministries and over 5,400 members, has served the spiritual and social needs in the Midlands of South Carolina for over 100 years with substantial growth in membership and community services, activities and programs.
