Ways to give
Choose the Gift That Fits You
A Gift of Cash
A gift of cash (check or credit card) is the most popular way to give. A cash gift has an immediate impact on students, faculty and buildings and grounds. The gift is considered made on the date it is delivered to the University. A gift of cash entitles you to a federal income tax deduction of up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income.
Matching Gifts
You may be able to double or even triple the amount of your gift to Claflin University through a matching gift. Thousands of corporations and businesses now have programs to match employee gifts, either in whole or in part. In some cases, gifts from spouses, directors and retired employees are matched. Claflin urges you to explore this possibility. Ask your employer if your company is a matching gift organization.
Gifts of Appreciated Assets
A gift of appreciated securities such as stocks, mutual funds or bonds - that have been held for one year and a day - can provide attractive benefits to a donor. An outright gift of long-term appreciated assets avoids capital gains taxes and, in most cases, the donor obtains a charitable income tax deduction equal to the market value of the securities. Institutional Advancement has a simple process to assist you should you wish to make an outright gift of appreciated assets.
Gifts of Real Property
Gifts of real property can easily be given to Claflin University. You may contribute real property to the University, either as a bequest or by a lifetime transfer, and realize significant tax benefits. Gifts of real property may consist of almost any type of property such as personal or recreational residence, a farm or ranch, a commercial building, subdivision lots or any undeveloped parcel of land. The gift may consist of all of your interest in the property or an undivided fractional interest. Gifts of real property are transferred by deed from the donor to Claflin University.
A Life Income Gift
A Life Income Gift allows a donor to make a transfer of assets as a gift to Claflin University while receiving income for life from the gift. By irrevocably transferring assets the donor can receive income tax and financial benefits. A Life Income Gift enables the donor to make a substantial contribution to the University without financial sacrifice.
Gifts of Personal Property
Claflin University has been greatly enriched by gifts of personal property such as rare books, manuscripts, paintings, artifacts and other art objects. Our classrooms and research capabilities are also enriched by contributions of computer hardware and software. Making a gift using personal property provides a double benefit - a charitable deduction plus avoidance of any potential capital-gains tax.

Leadership Giving
Leadership Giving Society
The Leadership Giving Society at Claflin University was established in 1996 with two primary purposes in mind: (1) to thank those individuals who have made leadership gifts to the University and (2) to encourage a greater number of leadership gifts. Exclusive membership is given to alumni and friends who commit cash gifts of $1,000 or more annually, benefiting scholarships, academic programs, faculty recruitment and classroom enhancements.
Leadership giving at Claflin is crucial to the remarkable achievements of our university and ensures that students are given every opportunity to succeed in the classroom. Claflin University appreciates the generous support of alumni and friends at all levels of giving. The Leadership Giving Societies are based on your annual giving to Claflin University from October 16-October 15. Your gift, along with your corporate match, will be combined for inclusion in the highest annual recognition society.
Special recognition is given to members in appreciation of their exceptional devotion.
What Does Leadership Giving Support?
Leadership Giving supports the fundamentals of a Claflin education, such as:
- Endowment Support
- Scholarships
- Capital Projects (i.e. the construction of the Claflin Chapel and the Bio-Technology Center)
- Athletics
- International Study
And that’s not all! Leadership Giving funds the University’s highest priorities that are not covered by tuition. These include recruiting and retaining the best students and faculty.
Why Should I Increase My Gifts?
If you have been making Annual Fund gifts at the $1,000 level, please consider upgrading your gift to $1,896 or more. Why? Because Claflin students need your support. As the expense of providing a Claflin education continues to rise with the cost of living, we hope the size of your gifts will also increase. Your gifts have a direct impact on our students and it is your generosity that guarantees that the unique experience of Claflin will be passed on to a new generation of students.
Why Should I Become a Leadership Donor?
Becoming a part of the Leadership Giving Society will give you the satisfaction of knowing that you have led the way toward ensuring Claflin’s standard of excellence and phenomenal achievements. Members of the Leadership Giving Society exemplify dedication to Claflin’s future.
We encourage you to become a member of the Leadership Giving Society. We also sincerely thank those of you who have already committed to increasing your gifts in support of Claflin’s vision and needs.
