A 21-year-old Claflin University student died Oct. 26, 2025,  after he collapsed in the school’s gymnasium, Orangeburg County Coroner Sean Fogle told The Times and Democrat of Orangeburg.

The student was Savion Brown, of Macallano Drive, Charlotte, N.C., Fogle said.

The person who called 911 said Brown had been playing basketball when he collapsed, according to Fogle. Orangeburg County EMS arrived, attempted life-saving measures and took Brown to MUSC Health-Orangeburg, where he died.

Claflin University President Dr. Dwuan J. Warmack issued a statement reporting that Brown “was a computer science major and valued member of our Claflin community.”

"His presence will be greatly missed. Please keep Savion’s family and loved ones in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time,” Warmack said.

Warmack noted that grief counselors were on campus Monday at the James and Dorothy Z. Elmore Chapel.

In addition, students have 24-hour access to free, confidential counseling through TimelyCare, a support service available to all Claflin students. Email timelycare.com/Claflin.edu or call 833-484-6359.
