Ladies take the reins of SGA

Jessica Tolbert is the SGA president for 2016-17.

Claflin University students voted to elect the 2017-18 officials for the Student Government Association and class officers after a week of campaigning by hopefuls.

Jessica Tolbert, a sophomore who hails from Tennessee, was elected president of the SGA board.

Current SGA President Dominique Riggins congratulated his successor with a post on social media.

“His plan; The promise; Our Purpose. Congrats @jesssahcah SGA is in great hands. Continue to change the world. And when asked why. Simply say: ‘if not me, who?’" Riggins said in the social media post.

Tolbert since her freshman year has been very active on campus through various organizations. She said she was hesitant at first to run for SGA president

“I tried to deny what God was leading me to do because I felt that I did not possess what was needed to achieve greatness,” Tolbert said.

Once she decided to run, she was supported by many on campus.

“I confirmed that it was indeed time for me to step up. The Claflin community should be prepared for a leadership team that is ready to embark upon a greater vision.” Tolbert said.

Chelsey Williams, a sophomore from Georgia, was elected the SGA vice president and Cecillia Hackett, sophomore and South Carolina native, is the new Miss Claflin University 2017-18.
