Mrs. Christine Powell-Thomas
Biography
Christine Powell-Thomas, a Jamaican-born Mezzo-Soprano, has nurtured her passion for performance from an early age, gaining experience in several performing arts companies. After successfully completing her degree in Biotechnology, she transitioned to fully embrace her love for music.
During the summer of 2025 Christine made her role debuts as ‘Marcellina’ in Le Nozze di Fagro and ‘La Abuela’ in La vida breve with Chautauqua Opera Conservatory where she worked closely with Denyce Graves-Montgomery, Jonathan Beyer and several other world-renowned opera singers. She performed works by Damien Geter and participated in the Orchestral workshop and recording of Missy Mazzoli’s Lincoln in the Bardo scheduled to be premiered at The Metropolitan Opera in 2026.
In previous seasons, Christine made her operatic debut as ‘Grace’ in Linda Lister’s State of Grace, ‘Ruggiero’ in Handel’s Alcina both with UM Opera Theatre, performed the role of ‘Taller Daughter’ in Missy Mazzoli's Proving up, ‘Guccio’ in Giacomo Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi, ‘Madam Kirsten’ in Dan Shore’s The Beautiful Bridegroom and ‘Mother’ in Gian Carlo Menotti’s The Consul with Opera at USC.
Additionally, Christine performed with the Southern Exposure: new music series and the BlackBox Ensemble at their fall concert at the University of South Carolina; the USC-Castleton Summer Immersion Program (Castleton, VA), and for the University of South Carolina School of Music’s Centennial Celebration at the Koger Center for the Arts (Columbia, SC).
Christine is an international concert soloist who has performed works by Christopher Tin’s The Drop that Contained the Sea, G.F. Handel's Messiah,W.A. Mozart’s Regina coeli, among other works and a proud member and soloist of the Mississippi Choral Artists.
Christine holds degrees from Alcorn State University (Lorman, MS), the University of Mississippi (Oxford, MS) and is currently pursuing her Doctor of Musical Arts degree at the University of South Carolina (Columbia, SC). Christine is an adjunct instructor of voice at Benedict College, Claflin University, and a Graduate Teaching Assistant in Music Appreciation at the University of South Carolina.
Christine has several exciting performances on the horizon and continues to create captivating musical experiences on her journey. Beyond music, Christine cherishes moments with loved ones, savoring laughter and, interestingly, her favorite indulgence – dessert.
