Reverend Dr. Ernest C. Etheredge


The Reverend Ernest C. Etheredge was born in Saluda South Carolina to Sam and Bertha Nutridge Etheredge. Ernest is the sixth of twelve children.

He was educated in the public schools of Saluda County and graduated from Riverside High School in June of 1964.

He continued his education at Lander University completing a B.S. Degree in Sociology.

He later received the Master of Divinity Degree from the International Theological Seminary –Gammon Seminary, Atlanta Georgia in 1981.

Hungering for more education he attended Erskine Theological Seminary in Due West, S.C. where he earned the Doctor of Ministry Degree.

Ernest has served the United Methodist Church on both the District and Conference Levels: Committee on Ordained Ministry, Congregational Development, Pastoral Care and Counseling, District Superintendency Committee, Epworth Children’s Home Board, The Bethlehem Center Board, The SC Methodist Conference Credit Union Board in addition Ernest was elected to the 2008 General Conference held in Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas and elected to the 2008 Southeastern Jurisdiction of the United Methodist Church. Ernest was also elected to serve on the General Board of Church and Society.

Ernest has completed several units of Clinical Pastoral Education (CPE) including: The Georgia Retardation Center (3 Units), Atlanta Georgia; The Academy for Pastoral Education (6 Units) and served as a Clinical Chaplain with the South Carolina Department of Mental Health.

Ernest has served the following local churches/charges: Laurens Charge (Calvary – Mount Carmel) 1975 – 1979; Seneca Circuit (St. James – John Wesley – Trinity) 1979 – 1982; Silver Hill 1982 – 1986; I. DeQuincy Newman 1986 – 1991; Crafts Farrow State Hospital (Clinical Chaplain) 1991 – 1996; Wesley, Columbia 1996-2001; Trinity Orangeburg 2001 – 2004; Walterboro District Superintendent 2004 – 2012, and Francis Burns 2012 – Retired June, 2016.

He also served as the District Superintendent of the Walterboro District from 2004 – 2012.

Ernest also served as an Adjunct Professor at Benedict College, Columbia College, and Claflin University. In addition, he has served as the Claflin University Chaplain for two years. He also served as the Minister of Visitation for Francis Burns.

Ernest worked in the private sector from 1964 – 1974 as a Production Engineer with Monsanto Textile Company in Greenwood, S.C.

He served in the U. S. Army for two years and was honorably discharged.

Ernest is married to Gwendolyn Haynes Etheredge and they have three children: Anthony, LaKicha and Ivan; ten grandchildren Javon, Micah, Macala, Anthony, Namayah, Monet’, Islan, Addison, Ivan, Ileia and Noah.
