Dr. Shannon Smith is Associate Professor and Chair of Claflin University’s Department of Nursing
Biography
Dr. Shannon Bright Smith is a native of rural Colleton County, South Carolina. She is a Walterboro High School graduate and keeps a close connection to her hometown of Ritter, SC.
She was previously an educator in the #1 ranked U.S. online nursing program and has held adjunct faculty roles with local schools of nursing since 2001; teaching in Accelerated BSN, RN-BSN, MSN, Doctor of Nursing Practice, and PhD Programs. She also has inpatient clinical nursing experience in Surgical Stepdown, Progressive Care Unit, and Digestive Disease units at MUSC and St. Francis Hospitals. Dr. Smith has many years’ experience in nursing case management. She is a member of the American Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing, the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates, and a Lifetime Member of MUSC College of Nursing’s Alumni Association. She received the Outstanding BSN Faculty Award in 2013 and is a 2016 inductee into the W.L. Bonner Bible College Hall of Fame for contributions in Education. Her interests include enhancing student success, technology integration in online education and hospital readmission prevention.
Dr. Smith is a 2015-2017 Fellow of the Society of Gastroenterology Nurses and Associates and a 2017 Fellow of the American Association of Colleges of Nursing’s Leadership in Academic Nursing Program.
