Alice Carson Tisdale

Alice Carson Tisdale is a native of Montgomery, Alabama. She attended elementary school in Mobile, Alabama, and graduated high school in the Philippine Islands, Clark Air Force Base. Her parents settled in Dover, Delaware, over 45 years ago, thus she considers Delaware her home.

Mrs. Tisdale received the Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Elizabeth City State University, Elizabeth City, North Carolina, and the Master of Education degree in reading diagnosis and remediation from Salisbury State University, Salisbury, Maryland. She further completed an educational internship on middle level administration with the Delaware State Department of Education.

Mrs. Tisdale has written and published: An Agenda for Success: Restructuring Middle Level Education in the State of Delaware and APEX: Reaching the Top! An Alternative Program for Middle Level Education.

In 1986, she received the District Teacher of the Year award while teaching in the Smyrna School District, Smyrna, Delaware. Before moving to Orangeburg, she taught in that district for 21 years. In 1991, she received the State Chamber of Commerce “Superstars! In Education Award” from the State of Delaware for innovative teaching strategies and later, the “NAACP Educator of the Year Award” from the Dover, Delaware, Central Branch of the NAACP. In 2004, she was awarded the “Outstanding Director of the Year” by The National Association of African American Honors Programs (NAAAHP). In 2011, she received the Community Service Award from the Delta Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., and was the recipient of the IMARA Magazine Community Service Award.She received the 2012 Education Award from the Orangeburg, SC Branch of the NAACP, and in December of 2013, she and her husband, Dr. Henry N. Tisdale, received the Times & Democrat “Persons of the Year” for the phenomenal transformational change taking place at Claflin University. In September, 2014, she received the Order of the Palmetto, the highest civilian award in the State of South Carolina, presented by Gov. Nikki Haley.

In 1996, Mrs. Tisdale was honored by the Claflin University Board of Trustees by the naming of the University’s honors college as “The Alice Carson Tisdale Honors College.”

Mrs. Tisdale has served many organizations, among these: Current appointment by SC Governor Nikki Haley to the Governor’s Mansion and Lace House Commission; Board Member, The Oaks; Past National President and Secretary/Treasurer of the National Association of African American Honors Programs; pastBoard Chair of the Orangeburg County Salvation Army, pastBoard Chair of the Orangeburg County Community of Character. She is a member and Co-Founder/Director of the “Praise Kids” children’s Christian theater at Trinity United Methodist Church, Orangeburg, SC; member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated, Beta Zeta Omega Chapter; The Links, Incorporated, Orangeburg Chapter, and The Girlfriends, Incorporated, Columbia, S.C. Chapter.

Mrs. Tisdale is married to Dr. Henry N. Tisdale, the 8th President of Claflin University, who is now in his 23rd year of service. She holds duel titles of First Lady of Claflin University and the Director of the University Honors College. She is a motivational speaker for children and people of all ages.

The Tisdales are the proud parents of two grown children: Danica C. Tisdale Fisher, PhD, a graduate of Spelman College and Emory University, Miss Georgia 2004 and Top Ten in the Miss America Scholarship Pageant 2005, currently employed as Program Administrator, Assistant Director & Dean of Admission for Summer Session, Phillips Academy, Andover, MA; and Brandon Keith Tisdale, a graduate of Tennessee State University, and employed as Director of Catering & Events, Sodexo Food Services, Coker College, Hartsville, SC.
