Transfer Services: Transfer Equivalency

The information below explains how transfer credit is evaluated, posted to a student record, and applied toward degree completion.

Transfer Credit Review and Posting

Students who transfer credit from other regionally accredited institutions will have their course equivalences available for viewing within approximately two weeks after being accepted to the University, which includes receipt of Official College Transcripts and payment of the Enrollment Deposit.

Transfer credit is posted to a student’s academic record/transcript, displaying the prior institution and the year/term in which the course(s) was taken. The grade earned will also be posted. Students may view transfer credit via MyClaflin by checking their Academic Transcript or Course History.

Important: Transfer credit is not calculated in a student’s GPA at Claflin University. No quality points or transfer GPA will show on the transcript.

Transferability Standards

Degree-level credit only: Only degree-level credit is transferable.
Minimum grade required: A grade of C or better is required for transferability.
Catalog restrictions: Courses marked as “not transferable” in the sending institution’s catalog will not transfer.
Remedial/Developmental coursework and courses with grades lower than a C do not receive course credits.

Quarter-System Conversion and Military Transcripts

Quarter to Semester Conversion Transfer credit from institutions on the quarter system will have quarter credits converted to semester credits. Courses whose quarter credits closely match semester credit (e.g., 4 quarter credits = 2.66 semester credits; 5 quarter credits = 3.33 semester credits) and whose course description matches Claflin’s may have course content considered met, but additional credit may still be required to ensure total degree credits are satisfied.
Veterans / Joint Services Transcripts Claflin University welcomes veterans to submit official Joint Services Transcripts. ACE recommendations will be accepted for courses that are degree-level and applicable to Claflin programs of study. However, many ACE recommendations may not apply to traditional liberal arts programs.

Course Equivalencies and Elective Credit

Courses without exact equivalents will be coded as XELE and should be considered elective credit (e.g., SOCI1ELE / 2ELE / 3ELE / 4ELE). Elective credit will also be coded with the corresponding level (100, 200, 300, or 400).

Lower-division credit transfers as lower-division credit only (100 and 200). Upper-level credit transfers as upper-division credit (300 and 400) and may require department evaluation.

Level application: Lower-level credit may only be used to satisfy lower-level requirements unless approved in writing by the Dean of the associated school/college. Upper-level credit may sometimes be used to satisfy lower-level requirements as deemed appropriate by the Office of the Registrar and/or the associated school/college.

Syllabus Review for Non-Equivalent Courses

Courses that do not match any courses offered at Claflin may be reviewed for specific course credit upon submission of a course syllabus from the prior institution and a written request from the student. The syllabus must match the attendance period in which the course was taken.

Documentation should be submitted to the Office of the Registrar. After review by the appropriate department, exact course credit may or may not be awarded. If the course is not a suitable match, it will remain coded as an area elective at the corresponding level and may be used as elective credit where applicable.

South Carolina Technical College System (AA/AS) and Transfer Limits

Students with an earned Associate of Arts or Associate of Science degree from one of the 16 schools in the South Carolina Technical College System may enter Claflin as an upper-classman if they meet the agreement requirements, including a cumulative GPA of 2.00 or higher and a grade of “C” or higher in each applicable course. Students pursuing STEM fields may need additional math and science coursework.

Maximum transfer credit: No more than 90 hours of transfer credit may be used to satisfy undergraduate degree requirements.

Additional Transfer Policies

  • Students from non-regionally accredited institutions may request individual course review by submitting a syllabus to the Office of the Registrar.
  • Credits will not be accepted if courses are more than 10 years old, unless an exception is recommended by the Dean of the student’s school/college.
  • Credit-by-examination from other institutions is not accepted at Claflin.
  • MOOCs and some prior learning/competency-based education are not transferable, including (but not limited to) Coursera, Sophia Learning, and StraighterLine. MOOCs will not fulfill requirements/corequisites/prerequisites or count toward completed credits and/or GPAs.
  • AP, IB, Cambridge AICE, and CLEP credits are accepted when minimum cut scores are met; send official scores directly to the Office of the Registrar.
  • International students must use an accredited credentialing agency and request a course-by-course evaluation be submitted to Claflin. Transfer credit will be awarded for appropriate degree-applicable credit.
