Academic Standing Policy

Academic Progress

Undergraduate Academic Standing

Claflin University defines the following levels of undergraduate academic standing for degree-seeking students. These classifications are based on cumulative GPA (CGPA) and Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) standards, including the minimum completion rate requirement.

Good Academic Standing

CGPA 2.00+
Definition: A student is in good academic standing if they have a cumulative GPA (CGPA) of 2.00 or greater.

Academic Warning

One Semester
Definition: Students will be placed on Academic Warning if they do not meet the minimum GPA or the 67% completion rate during a given semester, but have not yet reached the thresholds for probation or suspension.
  • Conditions: Students are encouraged to seek academic advising and support services to improve performance.
  • Duration: Academic Warning is a one-semester status and students will be monitored for improvement in the following semester.

Academic Probation

SAP Monitoring
Definition: Students are placed on Academic Probation if, after the semester of Academic Warning, they still fail to meet the minimum GPA or completion rate standards.
  • Conditions: Students must meet with an academic advisor to develop a plan for improving their academic standing.
  • Students are required to complete a specified number of credit hours in the following semester.
  • GPA and completion rate will be closely monitored.
  • Duration: Students remain on Academic Probation until they achieve the minimum SAP standards.

If SAP requirements are not met by the end of the probationary period, the student will be subject to Academic Suspension. Students demonstrating academic progression (e.g., earning grades of 3.0 or greater) but remaining below the minimum GPA requirement may be reviewed on a case-by-case basis by the SAP Appeal Committee.

Academic Suspension

1 Semester Off
Definition: Students will be placed on Academic Suspension if they fail to meet SAP standards while on Academic Probation.
  • Conditions: Students are ineligible to enroll at Claflin University for one semester (excluding summer).
  • During this period, students may not receive federal, state, or institutional financial aid.

Appeal Process

Students who wish to return after suspension may submit an appeal to the Registrar’s Office or Financial Aid Office explaining the circumstances that led to their lack of progress and outlining a plan for improvement. Appeals must be submitted at least 30 days before the start of the next semester. Supporting documentation may be required (e.g., medical documentation, personal statements, or transcripts showing improved academic progress). Traditional in-person students on academic suspension may not take online courses.

Academic Dismissal

Not Eligible to Return
Definition: Students are placed on Academic Dismissal when they fail to meet SAP standards after returning from Academic Suspension.
  • Conditions: A student who is placed on Academic Dismissal will not be able to return to Claflin University.
