Claflin University women’s flag football team is getting ready for its second season, and the excitement is building as students sign up to be a part of a new chapter in Panther athletics.
The program officially launched Sept. 10 during an interest meeting, where coach Perry Brown shared plans about practices, upcoming games and scrimmages. Students who want to join can email Brown at Perbrown@Claflin.edu to inquire more about the team and required gear.
“Joining the team as a team manager is giving me and an opportunity to experience and practice in what I want to do in the real world, which is sports management,” Talia Glenn said. This sport brings competition for women and a meaningful experience for Glenn.
Flag football is one of the fastest growing women’s sports nationally. Claflin’s team, which competes in the CIAA (Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association), hopes to bring ladies from all different experience levels, offering a fun way to stay active, build relationships and stay competitive.
Players say practices will focus on building their fundamentals and competitiveness with passing drills and defensive drills.
“As long as you like to stay active and keep up, coach Brown is tough,” Glenn said.
Players are feeling the excitement for the season ahead.
Asata Townes said flag football is more than a hobby. “We’re not just playing for fun … we want to bring a championship back to Claflin.”
