With Claflin University’s most anticipated week of the year just around the corner, Dean of Students Dr. Arthur Doctor says this year’s homecoming celebration will bring “something new” while keeping beloved Panther traditions alive.

The excitement began Oct. 15 during Midnight Madness, when the homecoming concert lineup featuring K Camp and Bunna B was announced. The concert is set for Saturday, Nov. 22, in Tullis Arena. Doors open at 8:15 p.m., and the show starts at 9.

Along with the featured performers, a Claflin student artist will also get the chance to perform during the concert. “Auditions for that will come from SAB fairly soon,” Doctor said.

Claflin has a history of booking artists right before they skyrocket to fame.

“We had Megan Thee Stallion in 2019 — not long after, she blew up,” Doctor said. “My first year here, we brought Latto, and soon after she performed, she was named BET’s New Artist of the Year. We’ve also hosted Young Dolph and NoCap.”

“We’ve seen tremendous and positive feedback from not only alumni, but from the entire Orangeburg community,” Doctor said. “I was getting my hair cut last week, and my barber and everyone in the shop were asking about tickets because they wanted to see K Camp.”

Doctor smiled as he added a message for rising stars: “If any artists are watching this, just know — if you want to pop off, you need to come to Claflin.”

Beyond the concert, Doctor said students can expect a lineup of both new and traditional homecoming events.

“We’ll have some different types of events that will intrigue the campus community while also maintaining the traditions that make Claflin homecoming so special,” he said.

One of the most anticipated traditions during Homecoming week is the Greek step shows, performed by Claflin’s Divine Nine organizations.

“I’m excited again because we will see the most well-rounded Greek step show we’ve had in a while, with representation from just about all of our organizations on campus,” Doctor said.

Homecoming week also includes other campus staples, such as the Sunday church service, which Doctor said will have “a unique spin to kick off Homecoming.” Students can also look forward to additional events hosted by the Student Activities Board throughout the week.

While the Board does not directly plan events like the Presidential Scholarship Gala, Doctor said, “We’re excited to bring alumni together and generate support for the university, students, and scholarships through the Presidential Gala.”

The gala will feature a live musical performer, though the university has not yet announced who will take the stage. Singer Brian McKnight, initially set to perform on Nov. 21, had his invitation rescinded following public backlash.

Safety planning is still underway, and details about measures will be announced by the Department of Public Safety and campus administration in the days leading up to Homecoming week.
