SENIOR PROFILE: First-generation student graduates early

Iyanna Pickens made history in her family by graduating college in just three years as a first-generation student raised by her great-grandmother.

In spring 2025, Pickens completed her degree at Claflin University ahead of schedule, crediting discipline, support and a deep sense of purpose as the driving forces behind her accelerated path. As a mass communications major, she took full course loads year-round, including summers, while building a resume through campus media and athletic communications.

“I’m thankful for my grandmother. She’s the one who raised me, kept me grounded and reminded me that I could make it, even when things got hard,” Pickens said.

Her journey was more than academic.

Pickens is certified in mental health, participated in campaigns around wellness and produced a podcast interview with Claflin President Dr. Warmack, showcasing her media skills and leadership potential.

She said being strong meant more than just pushing forward — it meant making space for healing, speaking up and staying grounded in who she is.

“Chin up, chest out,” she said. “That’s how I walk through the world.”

Pickens now plans to take her experience into a career that blends storytelling, service and impact — living proof that where you start doesn’t determine how far you can go.
