Act I of Claflin University Summer Arts Camp to Stage ‘The Princess and the Pea’ Friday on Campus

Children in first through seventh grades have been learning the finer points of acting, art, dancing and singing during Act I of Claflin University’s Summer Arts Camp.
The campers – under the direction of Claflin associate professor of speech and drama Annette Grevious and assistant professor of speech and drama Cedric Rembert – will present their culminating production, Ric Averill’s “The Princess and the Pea,” at 6 p.m. Friday, June 20, in the W.V. Middleton Fine Arts Center on the Claflin campus. The performance is free and open to the public.
Now in its fifth year, the University’s Summer Arts Camp has engaged more than 100 children from Georgia, New York, North Carolina, Oklahoma, South Carolina and Virginia. Act I of this year’s camp is being held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, June 9-20.
“This year, we had 13 very talented children from various parts of South Carolina” participate in Act I, Grevious said. “We hope they leave the camp with a growing appreciation and passion for the arts that will continue through their adult years.”
Throughout the two-week camp, the children have been working with college professors and upper-level college students to further develop their artistic abilities and increase their awareness and appreciation for the arts. The campers also visited the South Carolina Aquarium in Charleston and Whirlin’ Waters in Summerville.
“The arts are a foundation for human and life exploration, which creates well-rounded individuals who are extraordinary creators and thinkers,” Grevious continued. “Our children are the key to keeping the arts alive!”
The Claflin University Theatre Ensemble will host Act II of the Summer Arts Camp for rising eighth- through 12th-graders from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday, July 7-18, 2014. The second act will provide an opportunity for the campers to write and produce portions of their own culminating production, in addition to receiving assistance with writing and instruction in acting, dance, music, and set design and construction.
